Black Mirrors (Wide Eyes Theatre Collective)
By Andrew Bell | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
The problem with using real people’s words is that a lot of the time people are dull and trite; this is an issue for ‘Black Mirrors’. Because the voice of the Young Officer character is undeniably real, it comes across as a rather unemotional type of the sort we’ve all seen before. Additionally, the revelation – war is brutal – is not a surprise, and while the tableware polishing routine the cast undertake is well prepared, it makes them look like more waiters, not naïve cadets. This is a pity, because the cast put in good performances that should have made for a better play. Ultimately, however, the Young Officer character just isn’t interesting enough for his own show.
