Alice In Cha (Aztikeria Teatro)
By Zulekha Grace | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
The concept was interesting: take a Windows Live Messenger conversation between a man and a woman, and mine it to portray the intricacies of painful love and the human soul. The reality, however, worked less well. A man, naked but for an entrapping tangle of coloured threads, lies on what looks like a psychiatrist’s couch, and a naked girl stands nearby, trapped within a plastic bubble. Unearthly singing erupts from the back of the audience: a bizarrely made-up second girl. Speaking in Spanish, they act out the emotional responses of the chat participants as lines from the chat transcript are projected behind them. Unfortunately, the timing is off, and, crucially, the show lacks emotional punch, leaving the audience bewildered.
