People I Tried To Like (Glasgow Actors)

By | Published on Tuesday 16 August 2011

Performed by seasoned actor and writer Iain Heggie, ‘People I Tried To Like’ is an anecdotal monologue which takes place in the supposed new lodgings of the protagonist. As he unpacks his belongings, Heggie reminisces about his friends, relatives and neighbours, all of whom he appears to find, to varying degrees, insufferable. From the dysfunctional residents of his block of flats – including an elderly transsexual and a Nazi enthusiast – to his bigoted and racist uncle and aunt from whom he swindles money, Heggie gives an astute portrayal of the shortcomings of both the characters and himself. Ironically, this attention to how frustrating and unreasonable he himself is, only serves to render Heggie one of the “people I tried to like”, and failed.
