JEWELSH (Bennett Arron / PBH’s Free Fringe)
By Joseph Fleming | Published on Saturday 27 August 2011
My greatest problem with this wonderful hour was that Bennett Arron wore his trilby indoors and in the presence of women. Aside from this pedantic gripe, it was pretty much note-perfect. Arron, a half-Welsh, half-Jewish comedian, who should be the most pessimistic person on earth if rudimentary national and religious stereotypes possess any validity, could hardly be described as a despondent host. His assured routine on the difficulties of dual identity demonstrated that he was a wordsmith of the highest order, featuring intelligent witticisms and unexpected punchlines aplenty. Arron, who has supported Ricky Gervais on several tour dates, seems like the wrong candidate for the Free Fringe; with hindsight, I would have paid at least £10 for this show.
