Eric Davidson Verses The World (Eric Davidson)
By Dave Fargnoli | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
When Eric Davidson launches into a ditty about Alex Salmond’s breasts, it’s pretty clear what sort of show you’re seeing. With smutty satire, puns and innuendo delivered in rhyming doggerel, it’s cheeky rather than daring, silly rather than shocking, and well suited to the older audience in attendance. Below the surface, though, there’s a keen wit and a distinctly Scottish outlook; the kind of banter you’d hear in a Leith pub after the football. Celebrities, bankers and similar obvious targets get an entertaining skewering, while an extended riff on the wonders of the Festival delivered in the style of a booze-sodden tramp shows him at his best. It’s better than it first seems.
