Andrew Lawrence – The Best Kept Secret In Comedy Tour (Chambers Management)
By Joseph Fleming | Published on Friday 26 August 2011
Double Edinburgh Comedy Award nominee Andrew Lawrence makes perpetually downbeat newspaper columnist Charlie Brooker appear effervescent and inarticulate by comparison. Lawrence, a pallid, rake-thin, ginger-haired misanthrope, delivers worryingly acerbic but immensely eloquent diatribes on a selection of bleak bugbears: the futilities of queuing, the perils of attending music festivals, and so forth. It took several routines for the audience to appreciate his distinctive brand of grotesque verbal turpentine, with their reactions building gradually from quiet, straight-faced concern to roaring, irrepressible laughter. Lawrence confessed that his career trajectory hasn’t improved following a recent appearance on ‘Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow’. Redress this miscarriage of justice by helping him sell out a venue that is far too small for his talent.
Pleasance Courtyard, 3 – 28 Aug, 8.00pm (9.00pm), £9.50 – £12.50, fpp38.
