Tiny Dickens (Bombini Theatre Company)
By Katie Cunningham | Published on Wednesday 31 August 2011
A speedy adaptation of five of Dickens’s classics, this production can feel rushed but is performed with so much hilarious manic energy that it’s impossible to dislike. The cast sets out to prove the merits of Dickens to a doubtful friend, and, by extension, the audience. It’s funny and fast-paced, though sometimes a little too fast for a young audience. Although a sophisticated idea to highlight the similarities in Dickensian rags-to-riches stories, their mash-up of ‘David Copperfield’ and ‘Great Expectations’ is all the more difficult to follow. Still, when a show is as funny as this, the problems are not noticeable, and the talented delivery mean that much of it was clearer than it might have been.
