Alicia En La Loteria (International Collegiate Theatre Festival)

Through the eyes of a Latina girl in a foreign land she does not understand comes this re-imagining of Lewis Carroll’s classic ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’. The script is witty, the cast enthusiastic and the production colourful; however, it is sometimes difficult to follow, despite the general familiarity of the storyline. As a play aimed at children, this is problematic. Partly, this is due to the restrictions of the venue, which enforce a semi-circular seating plan, and the direction includes tableaux and puppetry which had clearly been designed with a front-facing audience in mind. Sometimes the moral element is a bit obvious and felt too try-hard. Nonetheless, an interesting exploration of what it means to be unfamiliar.
